New Wave is a type of song that appeared in Greece in the early 1960's. The term is a translation of the homonymous film movement "nouvelle vague", which prevailed in France during the 1950's.
It can be considered as a tendency to renew the light song and is characterized by simplicity, with often just a guitar accompanying the singer. Songs were performed at the time in small art galleries, called "boites".
The lyrics of the songs were of erotic, social and political content. The major representatives of the New Wave were Giannis Spanos, Lakis Pappas, Giorgos Zografos, Arleta, Notis Mavroudis, Keti Homata, Giannis Poulopoulos, Michalis Violaris, Rena Koumioti, Kostas Chatzis and others.
