This is undoubtedly the greatest music work of Mikis Theodorakis based on the secular oratorio by the Nobel prize winner Greek poet Odysseas Elytis.

Odysseas Elytis (1911-1996) is one of the greatest Greek poets and was awarded with the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1979. He was born in Crete and published his first poem in 1935. Elytis was regarded as a major exponent of romantic modernism in Greece and the world.

"To Axion Esti" (It Is Worthy) was published in 1959 and is his most known work, mainly because its setting to music by Mikis Theodorakis as an oratorio. The Swedish Academy citation for the Nobel Prize award singled out "To Axion Esti" as 'one of twentieth-century literature's most concentrated and richly faceted poems.'

The CD listed here is an EMI digitally remastered edition of the first recording made in 1964. It is accompanied by a 24-page booklet (in Greek) with photographs from the original recording and all the lyrics of the album.

As an extra bonus, we are including a second CD of this work from a live performance at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in 1988. The orchestra is conducted by Mikis Theodorakis in both discs.

Soloists of the original recording were: Theodoros Dimitrief (baritone), Manos Katrakis (narrator), The Thaleia Vyzantiou Chorus and Grigoris Bithikotsis (singer).

Soloists of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus live recording were: Andreas Kouloumbis (baritone), Nikitas Tsakiroglou (narrator), The Athens Choir Ensemble and Giorgos Dalaras (singer).
