BLACK ADDER - The Complete Collection - Limited Edition
One of the best comedy series ever to emerge from England, Black Adder traces the deeply cynical and self-serving lineage of various Edmund Blackadders from the muck of the Middle Ages to the millennium. The box set contains 6 discs:
Blackadder
King Richard IV is the insane monarch ruling England during the really dark part of the Dark Ages. He has two sons: one, Harry, his elder son and the Prince of Wales. Although highly respected by the court and overly favored by his father, Harry is rather looney, as well... and two, Edmund, Duke of Edinburgh, who is loathed by his family and detested by the court. Despite this, the slimy, cocky, foolish and sarcastic Edmund, donning a costume and the alias of "The Black Adder", is out to inherit the throne, assisted by two sidekicks: Percy, the only nobleman stupid enough to respect him, and Baldrick, a street-wise peasant with inspired "cunning plans".
Sixty years after the demise of Prince Edmund Plantagenet, Queen Elizabeth I, who's as insane as her ancestors, is England's current leader. Seductive, easy-to-impress, spoiled, and always seeking a husband, "Queenie" has a leading courtier: Lord Edmund Blackaddder, great-grandson of the original. Now, however, he is dryly cynical and intelligent, but still trying to become king; this time by marrying the queen. However, her right-hand-man, Lord Melchett, will always serve as fair competition for her hand. Blackadder is again assisted by the clueless but fashionable Lord Percy Percy and dung-eating, "cunning" peasant Baldrick.
During the Regency period, the insane King George III's stark raving mad son, George, is the Prince Regent of Wales. Vulgar and staggeringly slow-and-dim-witted, George exhausts the country's money and would surely be dead by know were it not for his dry, angry, bitter, arrogant and cynical butler, Edmund Blackadder, Esq. Blackadder is an ex-aristocrat who has lost his family fortune and been reduced to servant-hood, and full of loathing knowing he should have a better position then serving a lunatic. Sod-Off Baldrick is his dirty, smelly peasant servant, and Mrs. Miggins is an annoying cheerful coffee-shoppe owner who is too stupid to understand most of Mr. Blackadder's insults.
It is 1917, and lunatic General Sir Anthony Cecil Hogmanay Melchett is leading the British troops at the front lines against the Germans, while everyone waits for Field Marshall Haig's big push. There are various emotions throughout the camp about it. For Captain Kevin Darling, Melchett's bull-dog-like right-hand man, it makes no difference, as it appears he will be safe and sound with the general when the big push occurs. For Lieutenant George Colhurst Saint Barleigh, he is overly excited at thrashing the Germans. For Private S. (probably for Sod-Off) Baldrick, it's a terrifying experience he is not looking forward to. For Captain Edmund Blackadder, however, it's something he's too cowardly too face. Self-centered, arrogant, and sarcastic, Blackadder is always constantly searching for a way out of this silly war, and will try various, often crazy, variations on escape, all of which will take a turn he never expected. Sharing a dugout with George and Baldrick, his main obstacle for escape is Darling, who will ensure everyone is present for the big push.
During the reign of Good Queen Vic, there lives the black sheep of the Blackadder family, Ebeneezer Blackadder, who owns a Moustache Shoppe. As the theme song goes: "He's kind and generous to the sick/ He'd never spread a nasty rumour/ He never gets on people's wick/ And doesn't laugh at toilet humour". He cheerfully gives away nearly everything he has on Christmas Eve, and is, of course, heavily taken advantage of. After light-heartedly poking fun at his idiot clerk, Baldrick, he goes to bed that night, and is visited by the Spirit of Christmas- a ghost who haunts misers and makes them better people by showing them visions of their ancestors. After complimenting Ebenezer on his good taste and behaviour, he shows him two shadows of the past. The first shows Lord Edmund Blackadder buying Queen Elizabeth I a portrait of her for Christmas, finding she's decided to cancel the holiday, finding himself outdone by Melchett and sentenced to execution, and eventually outsmarting them all and winning the queen's favour. The next shows Edmund Blackadder, Esq devising a scheme to get George's presents. After giving Baldrick a disguise, he tells his master a story of a prince who gave away everything he had to an old granny on Christmas Eve. When an elderly lady (VERY coincidentally) arrives at the door, George gladly gives her all his presents; when Blackadder goes to compliment Baldrick, he apologizes for being late and says he was showing a sweet old granny to the door. The Spirit reluctantly shows Ebenezer two visions of the future, if he turns bad or stays good, and to Blackadder the decision seems obvious in the end: "Bad guys have all the fun!"
It's Millennium Eve and Blackadder is hosting a dinner party for a few select friends, Lady Elizabeth, Viscount George, Archbishop Melchett and Archbishop Darling. Baldrick devises yet another of his infamous cunning plans to help his ever greedy master Edmund Blackadder con money from his gullible friends. The pair build a "time machine" from empty cereal packets and place bets with their friends as to when in history they will travel, retrieving various artifacts from their travels as proof, items which Blackadder already owns! However, in a strange twist of fate the time machine actually works and the pair are thrown back in history initially to the Jurassic period. Gradually the pair start to return to their own time stopping off at various famous times in history such as Sherwood Forest and the Battle of Waterloo but will they make it home?
